Counseling Services

What is Therapy?

Therapy or clinical mental health counseling is a specialized form of counseling that focuses on diagnosing and treating individuals with emotional, mental, behavioral, and psychological disorders. It encompasses a broad range of therapeutic services and treatments aimed at helping people manage or overcome mental health issues. Clinical mental health counselors/therapists are trained professionals who use a variety of therapeutic techniques to assist their clients in achieving better mental health and well-being.

I enjoy working with young adults, adults and senior individuals from an array of different backgrounds or cultures. In my sessions, I enjoy addressing depression, anxiety, self-esteem/body issues, sexuality, relationship conflict, academic issues, career decision-making, and life-planning.
We often feel a variety of emotion and go through various trials/tribulations in life. With these aspects, comes the ability to narrate our own stories and overcome our obstacles. My job is to aid those who may need a little help narrating their story, whether that means discovering one's self, learning a new skill or breaking barriers that stand in the way.

Why Don't You Accept Insurance?

In my practice, the decision not to accept insurance is made with the well-being and privacy of my clients in mind. Accepting insurance requires navigating a complex system that often places undue administrative burdens on therapists, which can detract from the quality of care provided. Insurance companies typically require a diagnosis for billing purposes, which not only compromises client confidentiality but also forces a medical model onto mental health care that may not always serve the client's best interests. This can limit the therapeutic process to predefined parameters set by insurance providers, rather than tailoring our approach to the unique needs of each individual. Moreover, dealing with insurance can lead to delays in payment, reduced compensation for therapists, and increased operational costs, which ultimately impacts the affordability and accessibility of care for clients. By choosing not to accept insurance, I aim to maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, focus fully on client care without external constraints, and offer a more personalized therapeutic experience.

Sex therapy often falls into a gray area when it comes to insurance coverage. Many insurance plans do not recognize sex therapy as a reimbursable service due to the lack of a specific billing code for couples or relationship counseling, and the challenges in categorizing common sexual health concerns as medically necessary. Insurance companies typically require a diagnosable mental health condition for coverage, which does not always align with the goals and methods of sex therapy. This form of therapy frequently addresses issues related to intimacy, sexual satisfaction, and relationship dynamics, which are not always considered treatable conditions under the DSM criteria used by insurance providers. As a result, clients seeking sex therapy may find that their sessions are not eligible for reimbursement, or that involving a partner in therapy is not deemed medically necessary by their insurance plan. This limitation not only restricts access to specialized care but also underscores the broader challenges in how sexual health is perceived and valued within the healthcare system.

How Do I Check My Out-of-Network Benefits?

Out-of-network benefits is coverage provided by your insurance plan for healthcare services (in this case therapy) received from healthcare providers who are not part of the plan's designated network. These benefits generally include reimbursement for the cost of services obtained outside the network, though there may be limitations or conditions imposed by your plan.

Thrizer

I have partnered with Thrizer to handle the out-of-network process automatically for you. With Thrizer, you will only have to pay your co-insurance for our sessions, instead of paying my full fee and waiting for reimbursements. This can save you on average 70% upfront on our sessions. During our intake process, I can help you verify if you have out-of-network benefits and how much your co-insurance would be. To learn more, visit their website.

To utilize your out-of-network benefits without Thrizer:

Verify Your Benefits: Contact your insurance company to understand your out-of-network coverage, including deductibles, reimbursement rates, and any required documentation.

Superbill: Upon request, we will provide you with a superbill after each session. A superbill is a detailed receipt of services provided, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Submission: Submit the superbill along with any required claim forms to your insurance company. The reimbursement process and the amount covered will depend on your specific insurance plan.

*PLEASE NOTE: Insurance will only allow billing codes to be submitted once per date of service. If you are seen by multiple counselors in our practice, it is your responsibility to speak with your counselors to ensure that you are not seen multiple times in one business day or you will be responsible for the denied insurance claim.*

What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy aimed at addressing concerns related to sexual function, satisfaction, and intimacy. It is designed to help individuals and couples overcome sexual difficulties through talk therapy, where they can explore emotional, mental, and sometimes physical factors impacting their sexual health and relationships. This therapeutic approach is grounded in the understanding that sexual well-being is a significant part of overall health and personal relationships.

The sex therapy process typically begins with an initial assessment where the therapist gathers information about the individual's or couple's sexual concerns, health history, sexual background, and any relevant psychological or relational factors. This assessment helps in identifying the root causes of the sexual difficulties, which may be psychological, physical, or a combination of both.

Therapy sessions are conducted in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment, allowing clients to openly discuss their experiences, worries, and feelings. The therapist and clients work together to develop coping mechanisms and strategies to address the identified issues. These strategies may include communication exercises, educational components about sexual anatomy and function, and "homework" assignments designed to be carried out in the privacy of the client's home. These assignments might involve sensate focus exercises, sexual experimentation, or other activities aimed at enhancing intimacy and sexual satisfaction.

*It's important to note that sex therapy does not involve any physical contact or sexual activity between the therapist and the client. The therapy is strictly verbal and instructional, focusing on mental and emotional aspects of sexual health.*

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

A Good Faith Estimate (GFE) is an estimate of the total expected costs of non-emergency healthcare items or services, including counseling sessions. The GFE is designed to offer predictability and transparency in how much clients will be charged for healthcare services prior to their receipt. It includes all regularly scheduled appointments and may also include consultations with client collateral contacts, fees related to paperwork requests, and other legal and administrative fees related to client care when such items are scheduled in advance.

Your Rights Regarding Good Faith Estimates:

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare service or item, including mental health care.

You are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate within 1 business day of scheduling an appointment or within 3 business days upon request if you schedule an appointment at least 10 business days in advance.

If the actual billed amount is $400 or more than the Good Faith Estimate, you may be eligible to dispute the bill through a federal dispute resolution process.

How to Request a Good Faith Estimate from Sexhale Services:

Request a Good Faith Estimate: You can request a Good Faith Estimate at the time of scheduling your appointment or at any point afterward. Simply inform our staff that you would like to receive a GFE for your scheduled services.

Provide Necessary Information: Our staff may ask for some basic information to prepare your Good Faith Estimate, including the type of counseling services you are seeking.

Receive Your Good Faith Estimate: We will provide you with a Good Faith Estimate in writing within the required timeframe. This estimate will be sent to you via the SimplePractice Client Portal.
